Perth workshop ledger
Bespoke picture framing, mount cutting, reglazing, canvas stretching and careful restoration for households, artists, small galleries and Perthshire families who want old work made sound, not made false.
Three Routes Through The Workshop
01
Timber frames, conservation mounts, backing, spacers, UV glass and acrylic, chosen at the counter with the picture in front of us.
02
Surface cleaning, varnish assessment, tear repair, paper flattening and cautious improvements where the object can safely take them.
03
Broken glass replaced, mounts cut, canvas stretched onto new bars and tired fittings made safe before they go back on the wall.
Alasdair’s Rule
When somebody brings in a family picture, the first job is to work out what should be kept as well as what should be corrected. A brown varnish can be dirt, age, old smoke from a range, or the very thing holding a thin glaze together. A pencilled name on the back board might matter more to a family than a perfect new sheet of backing. We use acid-free mounts, conservation boards and fixings that can be reversed because the next person to open the frame deserves choices too. The aim is not to scrub every sign of handling from a picture. It is to stop damage, make the work readable again and leave alone the parts that carry the family history.
1996
Trading in Perth since Alasdair Duncan left framing work for artists and antique dealers to open his own bench.
Conservation
Acid-free mounts, UV-filter glazing, reversible hinging and proper backing used where the picture calls for it.
